さて、このゲストハウスの住民とは、どんな人達だろうか？我が社のゲストハウスには20人程の住民がいるが、外国人と日本人の比率はほぼ同数だ。日本人入居者の中には、スキューバーダイビングの指導員を目指している若者などもいる。働きながらアメリカでの資格取得を夢見る彼にとって、英語のマスターは必須だ。しかし、そのために時間も費用も割くことのできない彼には、生活しながら英語が学べ、しかも海外生活の予行演習となるここは願ってもない環境である。まさに駅前留学ならぬ家内留学だ。
一方、スローライフを満喫して海外から戻ったばかりの日本人女性もいる。いきなり日本社会に戻る不安を和らげ、カルチャーショックを解消することが狙いだ。外国人の方はアメリカ人の大道芸人、ウェブデザイナーのウクライナ人、中国人の料理人、韓国人留学生など多彩だ。また、英語の講師はもちろん５ヶ国語を話すフィリピン人の商社マンなども住んでいるので語学の先生には事欠かない。
夕方になると、昼間は出かけていた入居者たちが戻ってきてリビングに集まり、各国の料理をつくったり、深夜までおしゃべりをしたり情報交換をしたり、なんだかとても楽しそうだ。
そんな話を聞きつけた入居希望者が後を絶たない。ある日70歳は超えているだろうご婦人が、「お部屋は空いてませんか」とハウスを訪ねて来られた。早とちりした管理人が「お孫さんが入居を希望しているのですか」と尋ねてしまった。その女性の返事は「住みたいのは私です。とても楽しそうだから」。
