ジャパンタイムズにこんな広告があり、それを頼りに新宿にあるオフィースをたずねて見たのは,
もう２０年も前の事である。その広告とは「If you have any troble about looking for apartment in Tokyo.Please call ○○○」（もし東京のお部屋探しでお困りの方は、こちらまで・・・・）こんなものだった。
私は、ニューヨークの大学(エール大学）を中退し旅行気分半分で、その日成田に降り立った。そんなわけでその日の宿泊先も予約せずにカバン一つでこの広告だけを頼りに新宿の事務所にやってきた。
事務所は新宿駅の直ぐそばにあり、なにか事務所というよりはステュジオタイプの住居みたいな感じで（これをワンルームマンションと呼ぶのだと後から知った）、そこには、電話で話したTAKEOがいたが、その他にはスタッフはだれもいなかった。
早速、自分の希望条件を話してみたが、条件に合う物件は見つからなかった。ちなみに私の条件とは、初期費用が１ケ月分だけでOKなところ、保証人なし、という条件でした。今はマンスリーマンション・ウィークリーマンションなどというものがあるが、当事はそういった便利なシステムのアパートはなく、私の希望条件をかなえてくれる物はTAKEOのオフィースにはなかった。
そんなわけで、TAKEOのオフィースを後にして他をあたる事にした。ただ、オフィースを出るときに、TAKEOが「他で見つからなかったら、また来たら」と言ってくれた。これは後で知った事だが、これは別れる時のあいさつみたいなもので、真にそう思って言ってる訳ではないことが多いそうだ。後からTAKEOにそう教えられた。彼はまさかまた戻ってくるとは思っていなかったそうだ。でも、外国人との付き合いがある、TAKEOとしては、なんか否な予感めいたものはあったと後から笑いながら話してくれた。
どこに行っても相手にされなかった。理由は、日本語が話なかったし、お金も、その保証人いなっかた
からだ。日本人は英語を話すものかを思っていた私の認識が、甘かった事をこのとき知った。
結局、そうなんです。またまたTAKEOのオフィースに「また来たら」という言葉を真に受けていく事にしたのです。ドアを開けた瞬間、彼は驚いた顔をして、「や～、いらっしゃい。他で見つからなかったの？」と言いながら、でも顔では「やっぱりな、そうだよな」といった表情を見せていた。
これからTAKEOと私の共同生活がはじまるのです。
