留学生と就学生の違いはな～に？
いま日本には約１３万人の留学生（在留資格が留学生ビザの者）がいるが、この中には日本語学校の生徒など就学生ビザの学生３万４千人は含まれていない。彼らは「就学生」と呼ばれ「留学生」とは区別されている。ただ、来日目的は同じ勉学であるから一般的には日本語学校の生徒も留学生と呼んで良いのではないだろうか。そこで、知り合いの日本語学校に「学校や生徒さんたちは"留学生"と"就学生"どちらの言い方を日常使っているのですか」とたずねてみた。これに対して学校は「そうですね～。学校も生徒たちも相手と場所に応じて"留学生"と"就学生"を使い分けています」との返事であった。
「留学生」と「就学生」なにがどう違うのだろうか？ 違いの一つとしては在留期間の長さにある。就学生が通う日本語学校の授業コースは短いもので3カ月、6カ月コースといったものがあり、そのため就学生ビザの在留期間は6カ月か1カ年と留学ビザの半分の期間である。
そこで問題になるのが、滞在期間の短い日本語学校生の生徒（就学生）の住まいである。彼らはどのような住居に住んでいるのであろうか。来日まもない生徒は、母国の留学生センターや学校から斡旋された学生寮もしくはドミトリー形式の住宅に住む者が多いようだ。日本に来たばかりで右も左も分からず日本語もろくに話せないのでは、一人で不動産屋をたずね部屋探しをするのは大変だ。その点、学校などから学生寮を斡旋してもらえれば苦労しないですみ保護者も安心であろう。
ただ、この学生寮が日本語習得目的の彼らにとって良い環境かと言えば、そうでもなさそうだ。学生寮体験者の韓国人李君は「たしかに、来日当初は先輩から日本の習慣や文化などについて教えてもらえるし、色いろな情報も入るので便利だと思います。でも、学校に行っても、家に帰っても同じ国の人（韓国人）では韓国にいるのと変わらない。わざわざ日本に来た意味がない」と。さらに「日本に少し慣れたら、出来るだけ日本人と接する機会の多い住まい形態に引っ越した方が自分のためになるのでは」と話を結んだ。
